World weightlifting championships 2025
After a successful European Championship in 2016, we are now ready for bigger tasks. The World Weightlifting Championship will be held in Sunnfjord from October 1st to 10th, 2025, and we look forward to showcasing everything our beautiful region has to offer.
The World Weightlifting Championship is one of the largest international sporting events ever held in Norway. From late September to mid-October 2025, Sunnfjord is expected to welcome between 600-800 athletes and several thousand accredited participants. Over 100 different nations will be represented, and TV broadcasts will reach hundreds of millions worldwide. Together, we aim to make this the best Weightlifting World Championship ever! We want to create a festival atmosphere for everyone in Førde!
For the 2025 World Championship, it’s essential to maintain a focus on the environment and sustainability. Therefore, we are planning a compact event with short distances. Sunnfjord’s main venue, Førdehuset, will host all competitions, while Øyrane Arena at the new Førde Upper Secondary School, along with several smaller facilities, will be available for training and preparation.
Most participants will stay in downtown Førde, with only a few minutes between various facilities. Additionally, cafes, shops, and other experiences are close by.
The 2025 World Championship is focused on creating an event that respects both people and the environment, promoting diversity and inclusion. We aim to take our share of responsibility by prioritizing sustainability in all our work related to the championship.
The World Championship is owned by the Norwegian Weightlifting Federation, AK Bjørgvin, Førde IL, and Tambarskjelvar IL. The event will largely be based on volunteer work, which will be compensated through the distribution of equipment and financial surplus. In addition, the organization has an administration team working on the planning and marketing of the 2025 World Championship.
